The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever
The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
