Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
